Created by understanding that …1) I get to determine my own Path and 2) Jesus is “The Path,”
I began this 30” x 40” oil sketch based on the phantasy painting by Henri Rousseau, “Tiger in A Tropical Storm, Surprised.” Academic issues (sketch, proportion, color recipes, underpainting, etc.) required some skill. Boil down into very simplistic mini-sketches. Another inspiration: Willem, and Elaine de Kooning. Theirs and my beginning painting are close enough in composition, that I super-imposed onto the original. What a cool mix. The experiment without worry about end result does not happen automatically. Throw myself in to a piece and confidence that the result will be worth it.
After about 1 hour into the “restoration,” I quit before I messed it all up. Once this layer dried I “drew” on some thick lines of paint to accent overall. It isn’t a copy of either the Rousseau or the de Kooning: It is mine, but with their voices in my brushwork. The title is also from a combination of various influences: Bright. Joy. Jesus is the Christ Shining light upon my steps.
To me it needs to be viewed horizontally.
Another masterpiece. This time, I recognized as soon as I finished it, how wonderful it is. It took several layers of paint to get it to this point and I changed my view a few times as I was creating it.
