This film still from a windy 1959 street scene in Belgrade captures a moment of personal and historical significance. The year 1959, my birth year, marks a pivotal point in Yugoslavia’s history, as the country began its shift from a predominantly rural, peasant-based society to a more urbanized one. This transition reflects the movement of people from the countryside to the city, reshaping the nation’s social and cultural landscape.
The wind in the image becomes a metaphor for the sweeping changes of that era. As Belgrade, the capital, symbolized the heart of this modernization, the blurring movement caused by the wind mirrors the dynamic changes occurring within society. The still evokes both excitement and uncertainty, encapsulating the transformative energy of a time when the traditional gave way to the new, both for the nation and for my own personal journey.
