This portrait of Nicholas Katzenbach, who served as United States Attorney General and later as Under Secretary of State, reflects Alan’s distinctive modernist approach to portraiture. The figure is rendered with restrained geometry and muted tonal fields, emphasizing form and psychological presence over traditional detail. Katzenbach’s contemplative expression and the simplified architectural setting suggest the gravity and intellectual rigor associated with his public service. Wood-Thomas also painted the official portrait of Katzenbach during his tenure as Secretary of State; this work appears to be a related study or alternative interpretation. Through subtle abstraction and careful composition, the artist captures both the physical likeness and the thoughtful character of a prominent American statesman.
