You and I: Universal Soldier is about Alan's father, Walter H. Powell. He served in World War II as a JAG officer during the occupation of Japan. Alan grew up with a collection of his photographs driving through Nagasaki, Japan a few weeks after the atomic bomb was dropped. "We grew up in the 1950s thinking of ourselves as warriors, cowboys and soldiers. The title refers to Buffy ST Marie song "Universal Soldier."
