About the artist

Jameel Radcliffe

Jameel was born in 1993 and raised in Boston, MA, where he developed his artistic practice. While most of Jameel’s artistic career has focused on abstract painting, his work ranges from portraiture to purely abstract pieces. He received his BFA from Montserrat College of Art in 2017 and recently held his first solo show at The Flowering Rock, where he exhibited a series of abstract works. Jameel currently works as an educator and mentor to young artists at Artists For Humanity, while continuing to paint out of the Dorchester neighborhood. As a person of Puerto Rican and Black descent, Jameel draws on a rich cultural heritage that deeply influences his creative process and the final result of each piece. The music, food, and daily experiences within his community come to life through every mark on his paintings.

My work focuses on the character we portray to the world. We express ourselves through the things we wear, how we style our hair, and the accessories we choose to convey that character to others. I choose to celebrate this. The color that this self-expression brings to our everyday lives is essential for communication and understanding within our communities. The animals are paired with the figures to connect them to the beauty and grace that naturally exist in birds and butterflies. Each character’s uniqueness is celebrated, as it is our differences that make each of us special.
