Turkish Decoration, Rd. 1884

Earthenware

10.25 x 10.25 in (26.04 x 26.04 cm)

Not For Sale

Plate, 10.25 inches diameter. Black transfer with polychrome clobbering. Printed and impressed marks for T. G. & F. Booth. The registry diamond dates the registration of this pattern to 1884. This busy pattern, as the pattern name suggests, was probably inspired by the Turkish designs of Iznik pottery from the late-15th through the 17th centuries. This style originated with the pottery produced in the Turkish town of Iznik and combined the traditional arabesque patterns of the Ottoman Empire with Chinese design elements derived from blue-and-white porcelain. This pattern is highly decorative and intricate, featuring a large vase sitting on a floating shelf, both decorated with geometric designs and stylized flowers. The rest of the well is filled with swirling stems of stylized flowers and leaves that originate in the vase. Around the well is a band filled with alternating Islamic geometric designs. The border consists of alternating flower groups in the same style as the well outlined with a simple gilded line.

T. G. & F. Booth were earthenware and ironstone manufacturers at the Church (Bank) Works in the High Street and at the Highgate Pottery, in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England. The partners were the brothers Thomas Gimbert Booth and Fred Booth. As well as the pottery manufacturing business, the brothers were glass, china and earthenware dealers and merchants. The partnership was dissolved on 1 January 1887 and Thomas Gimbert continued on his own account.
