Bio:
Christie Owen is known for her 2D minimalistic compositions. Owen’s approach is to find visual solutions and utilize a variety of tools, mediums, and applications to transfer concepts and techniques from project to project. Her motivation is to simultaneously unite harmony within each work, going back and forth between working without intention and careful planning. The materials Owen uses help guide the process while always searching for new combinations. Creating pieces that allow us to escape the technological realm, contemplate modern living and nature and then communicate how each domain influences another. Her pieces aim to engage the viewer with an emotional and environmental disposition that evokes a sense of balance and tranquility in the modern world.
Artist Statement:
My minimalistic style is not based solely on reduction, but involves a bit of modification, layering, and subtraction with both a painterly and sculptural approach. It is a physically labor-intensive and intuitive process where I preserve the happy accidents and focus on developing surface structure, form and color variations until I find balance. I push paint, sand layers, drag pencils, rip paper, and manipulate the materials until I find something interesting.
